Body of missing backpacker located along Bailey Range Traverse

News Release: Port Angeles, WA- A search for Lisa Markli of Port Angeles, WA, concluded on July 22nd after her body was located below Stephen Peak. Lisa was travelling solo on the Bailey Range Traverse, a remote, off-trail route. Olympic National Park dispatched aerial and ground resources on July 20th after she was reported overdue. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and Mount Rainier’s A-STAR helicopter extensively searched the area.

BLM accepting public comments for proposed geothermal lease sale in Nevada

News Release: The Bureau of Land Management today opened a 30-day public comment period on four environmental assessments for 53 parcels totaling 161,503 acres across Nevada that have been nominated for a proposed statewide geothermal lease sale. The public comment period closes Aug. 21, 2023. All parcels included in the lease sale will be auctioned via EnergyNet on Nov. 14, 2023.

The partners spent two days collecting seeds from some of the sage-grouse’s favorite plants-seeds that will one day be used to revegetate burned sagebrush habitat.


Water Swap authorized to help irrigators along the Rio Grande

News Release: ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--Water managers signed an agreement last week to transfer up to 30,900 acre-feet of water stored in Abiquiu Reservoir for Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority to Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District and Reclamation, making it available for immediate use. This will be exchanged with a corresponding amount of MRGCD and Reclamation-leased water currently held in Heron Reservoir further north.


BLM plans to protect Douglas County recreation areas from mining

News Release: ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Bureau of Land Management invites public comment on a proposed 20-year withdrawal to protect up to 163.62 acres across Olalla-Thompson Creek Day Use Area and Island Creek and Iron Mountain recreation areas south of Camas Valley and west of Riddle in Douglas County. The proposed withdrawal includes 21.2 acres of public lands with non-Federal mineral interest and 38.5 acres of non-Federal lands if acquired by the United States.

Extreme Fire Danger on Public Lands in Medford District

News Release: MEDFORD, Ore. - Due to recent high temperatures and increasing fire danger, Bureau of Land Management Medford District officials are implementing additional public use restrictions on BLM-managed lands in southern Oregon. Starting July 17, 2023, at 12:01 a.m., BLM Medford District is moving to Extreme Fire Danger.
