Repairs to the two-mile dirt road section of Montezuma Canyon Road within Coronado National Memorial are scheduled to start on Monday, April 10, 2023.
The temporary closure will take place from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, April 10 – April 15 to all vehicle, foot, and bicycle traffic. Each day, through vehicle traffic will be allowed to pass from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm. A high-clearance vehicle may be necessary during that half hour break. During all other construction times the gates on either end of the work zone will be closed and locked. Heavy equipment carrying water and materials will be moving into and out of the work zone during this time as well.
The road has been in rough condition due to heavy use and monsoon rains over the last two years. Much of the road base has eroded away leaving large holes and exposed rocks in the road. In addition to grading, work crews will be adding surface material to the road.
Hiking access to Joe’s Canyon Trail, Yaqui Ridge Trail, Coronado Peak Trail, or the Crest Trail will only be available from the Coronado visitor center. For more information visit Coronado National Memorial’s website.
