WINNEMUCCA, Nev.- The Preliminary Environmental Assessment for the Washburn Wells project will be made available for public review for 30 days, starting on May 8, and will end June 6, 2023. The proposed action would include the development of livestock wells, a water tank, pipelines and troughs, and spring exclosures within the Washburn Allotment.
“The well and pipeline development will provide additional operational flexibility for the currently authorized grazing permits across the entire allotment," said Winnemucca District Manager, Sam Burton.
The purpose of this action is to improve the rangeland and riparian conditions within the Washburn Allotment by providing additional water sources for livestock and wildlife. The Humboldt River Field Office’s purpose in considering approval of the application is to manage livestock grazing on public lands to meet standards of multiple use, sustained yield, watershed function and health, and rangeland health.
The need for the project is to improve livestock distribution to an optimum level over the entire allotment and to fulfill agencies’ responsibility under Federal Land Policy Management Act of 1976 to allow for legitimate uses of public lands while preventing undue and unnecessary degradation.
