The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 10. It is reproduced in full below.

Grants, NM - The National Park Service at El Malpais National Monument is postponing implementation of the Lava Fields Prescribed Fire due to changing weather conditions. Managers will re-evaluate implementation of the prescribed fire as conditions become more favorable.

The primary objective of prescribed fires is to improve forest health by reducing the build-up of vegetation that can fuel a wildfire. Fire plays a natural role at El Malpais and helps ensure the resiliency of this fire dependent ecosystem.

For questions about the prescribed fire call the El Malpais National Monument Visitor Center at (505) 876-2783. Fire information will also be available on https://inciweb.nwcg.gov and http://nmfireinfo.com. Learn more about what’s involved in planning and implementing a prescribed fire at https://www.nps.gov/subjects/fire/index.htm
