Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument Hosting Memorial Day Ceremony

The National Park Service staff of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument announces that it will hold a ceremony in recognition of Memorial Day at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 29. The ceremony will take place in Custer National Cemetery, which is located inside the Monument. The public is invited to attend.

Students from Lodge Grass Elementary (Lodge Grass, Montana) and Pretty Eagle Elementary (St. Xavier, Montana) will visit the week before to place American flags on the nearly 5,000 gravesites in Custer National Cemetery. Veterans from the Civil War and Indian Wars through the Vietnam War and their spouses and dependents are interred in Custer National Cemetery.

“Memorial Day is always an important holiday in our national cemeteries, which hold the remains of many Americans killed in action while serving,” said Todd Arrington, Acting Superintendent of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.  “We invite the public to join us this Memorial Day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and whose remains rest in Custer National Cemetery.”

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is located at 756 Battlefield Tour Road (just off I-90) in Crow Agency, Montana.  The Monument memorializes the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry, including Crow and Arikara scouts; and the Lakotas, Cheyennes, and Arapaho who participated in the June 25-26, 1876 battle that represented one of the last armed American Indian efforts to preserve their way of life.
