ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, or FUSRAP, will hold an open house in Florissant June 8 from 6 to 8 p.m.
During the open house, the FUSRAP team will discuss the three recently released Final Status Survey Evaluation reports that detail the results from the October 2022 radiological sampling at Jana Elementary School. The results determined that there were no radiological risks to the students or staff at the school and that no radiological contamination exists in or near the school that might have been generated by activities of the Manhattan Engineer District/Atomic Energy Commission, or MED/AEC, during the nation’s early efforts to produce atomic weapons.

The public is invited to the open house to learn more about FUSRAP sampling and testing procedures, results and FUSRAP program history. Subject-matter experts will be available to engage with and respond to questions.

“The St. Louis FUSRAP team is committed to continuing our efforts to update the community on the status of our program,” said Phil Moser, the FUSRAP program manager. “We look forward to this opportunity to meet with the community at the open house, to answer questions and to inform everyone about the science and the processes we use in our daily work.”
The FUSRAP team is currently working on remediating MED/AEC contamination on school property in the creek bank next to Coldwater Creek. It’s in a wooded area far from where students, teachers and staff gathered. Past FUSRAP sampling results determined that radiological contamination stopped at the creek bank, and the more recent sampling of the school building and the area surrounding it confirmed those findings.
