On Saturday, June 24, Fort Stanwix National Monument will be hosting a Junior Ranger and Unsung Heroes Day event. The event is free and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; with activities for the whole family highlighting the skilled professionals whose expertise was essential to the outcome of the 1777 siege of Fort Stanwix/Schuyler. Children and their families can also color a giant coloring wall, play 18th Century games, dress up in colonial clothing, and try out skills needed to run the fort. All children participating can earn a special Fort Stanwix Junior Ranger badge!
“The practical side of running a fort is often overlooked in history books," said Park Ranger William Sawyer, “These unsung heroes worked behind the scenes. Without them, the fort would have ceased to function. Even the soldiers’ families were crucial to its survival."
The next event taking place at Fort Stanwix is a “Mohawk River Bicycle Tour" on Sunday, June 25. A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.
Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week. The reconstructed fort is open 9:30 am-4:30 pm each day. The park visitor’s center is open Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm.
