Washington, D.C. —On May 17, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Chair and Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee respectively, announced their plans to hold markups of bipartisan funding bills in June.

“As yesterday’s hearing made clear, passing bipartisan, on-time appropriations bills is critical if we want to stay ahead of competitors like the Chinese government,” said Chair Murray and Vice Chair Collins. “There are countless challenges that hinge on a dependable appropriations process—whether that’s keeping America safe and standing up for democracy around the world, tackling the deadly threat of fentanyl, ensuring America remains the global leader in innovation, or strengthening our economy here at home. With so many urgent priorities before us, we are committed to marking up the Senate’s appropriations bills starting in June. We have to show there is a bipartisan vision to strengthen our nation’s competitiveness and security by investing in American leadership across the board and across the world—and a bipartisan will to get it done. We are determined to show that commitment exists through the Senate appropriations process.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee has held more than 30 subcommittee hearings on the President’s FY24 Budget Request. Just yesterday, Chair Murray and Vice Chair Collins led a full committee hearing with the Secretaries of Defense, State, and Commerce to review the President’s Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Request and assess the strategic investments needed in the upcoming fiscal year to strengthen America’s security and competitiveness and stay ahead of global competitors like China in the decades to come.
