Wheatland, Wyo. – The Bureau of Land Management has announced that it will pause in-person wild horse and burro adoption events scheduled through September 2023 at the Wheatland Off-Range Corral. Instead, the Wheatland Corral will focus on the BLM’s Online Corral virtual adoptions, allowing anyone across the nation who is interested in adopting a wild horse or burro to participate in adoptions.
The next Online Corral adoption event is scheduled for June 20-27. Bids will start at $125. Pickup location options are available and are listed on individual animal profiles in the online corral.
“We’ve seen a relatively low success rate at placing horses at our in-person adoption events in Wheatland this year, with about 15 animals being placed between the two events,” says Kevin Christensen, BLM High Plains District Manager. “In comparison, roughly 250 wild horses and burros were placed during the two online adoption events during the same time frame. While the online corral doesn’t replace the experience of picking your new horse or burro in person, it does allow us to attract adopters around the country that may not be able to make it to Wheatland.”
Prior to the adoption, participants should complete an online application, browse the individual animal profiles, and learn more about the rules and requirements for adopting a wild horse at https://wildhorsesonline.blm.gov/ .
The BLM will plan to hold the in-person adoption scheduled for Oct. 27, 2023, in Wheatland. For updates and information on future adoption events, follow BLM Wyoming on Facebook or Twitter, or visit https://www.blm.gov/whb .
