GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public input pertaining to recreation along 34 miles of the Gunnison River, which includes the segment of the river which flows through the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area.

The BLM is seeking input on the proposed action, which includes: (1) designation of campsites; (2) establishment of a reservation system for designated campsites; and (3) allocation of commercial use fairly along the Gunnison River corridor as it flows through the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area. This proposed action constitutes an implementation of key decisions from the approved Resource Management Plan for the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, signed on January 9, 2017.

“We appreciate public engagement and comments about the proposed actions,” said National Conservation Area Manager Amber Koski. “Public input helps identify and protect resources, helps monitor use, and aids in recreation planning for the public and commercial outfitters.”

Permit systems have been a highly successful tool for river recreation in Colorado. This system would help the public ensure access, help avoid accidental camping on private lands, and protect resources for years to come. Reservation systems aid in river trip planning and have helped manage the increased interest in recreation opportunities.
