Broad Channel, N.Y. –New York City Natural, an exhibit of paintings by Jessica Dalrymple, will open on Sunday, June 11. The exhibit opening and reception will be from 2 pm – 4 pm at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Dalrymple maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY, where she is also a community activist, environmentalist, teacher, and certified horticulturalist.

Dalrymple’s artistic process begins by visiting parks in all five boroughs, especially those with areas of “wilderness”. She spends time hiking, sketching, photographing, collecting specimens, and consulting with naturalists, cartographers, and horticulturalists about the park’s natural history and wildlife. In her studio she combines all these things into Park Portraits. She uses a vertical format, inspired by Asian hanging scrolls, to present multiple perspectives. This technique balances photo realism and express strokes in a way that represents her experience.

Dalrymple’s goal is to promote the value of New York City’s natural resources by educating and bringing people to these green spaces. It is her hope to raise awareness of these natural areas, and to advocate for their accessibility, preservation, expansion, and restoration. She also strives to inspire care for the environment at large. This exhibit will be on display through Labor Day. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is open Friday-Monday from 10 am to 4 pm.
