CONWAY, SC. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Savannah District, will begin the public comment period for the Proposed Plan (PP), and supporting documentation, for the former Conway Bombing and Gunnery Range (Conway BGR), Munitions Response Site (MRS) 07 in Conway, South Carolina, June 28, 2023, and ends July 27, 2023.

Comments can be submitted by email, mail or asked in person during the public meeting July 12, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the Horry County Memorial Library-Conway, 801 Main Street, Conway, South Carolina, 29526.

The Conway BGR is an approximately 55,854 acre Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) in Horry County, immediately northeast of Conway. The southern boundary of the site is situated to the north of the U.S. Hwy 501 and U.S. Hwy 17 intersection, and the Atlantic Ocean is located to the east. The MRS 07 site is located within the southwestern section of the FUDS property.

The property was acquired by the Department of Defense between Nov. 2, 1941, and July 17, 1944, to support operations for several bombing and gunnery ranges in the Myrtle Beach and Conway areas as part of the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield. The installation was active from 1941 until 1948; however, training was only conducted through 1947.

The Savannah District performed a Remedial Investigation (RI) at the former Conway BGR and concluded for MRS 07, as documented in the 2018 RI Report, that there are no explosive hazards because munitions and explosives of concern were not identified and there are no human health or environmental risks from munitions constituents. Accordingly, USACE is proposing, as documented in the PP, that no action be taken at MRS 07.

The PP is available electronically here, or the administrative record can be viewed at the information repository at the Horry County Memorial Library-Conway, 801 Main Street, Conway, South Carolina, 29526.

Comments, questions and notifications of interest in the public meeting can be sent to Stephen Fox, Project Manager at Stephen.M.Fox@usace.army.mil. Mailing address: USACE, CESAS-PM-H (FUDS), 100 W. Oglethorpe Avenue, Savannah, GA 31401-3604
