PETRIFIED FOREST, ARIZONA-Petrified Forest National Park will host poetry workshops on Saturday, September 2 and on Sunday, September 3 9am-12pm. Facilitated by poet Jodie Hollander, these free workshops will allow participants to create an original poem inspired by their connection to their public lands. Reservations are limited, and are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Each workshop is limited to 15 participants. Call or email Hallie Larsen at 928-524-6228 x274 or hallie_larsen@nps.gov to reserve your spot today.

Saturday, Sept. 2, at Petrified Forest National Park 9am-12pm.

Poetry of Place: This workshop will focus on the significance of place in poetry. Place may be defined as a geographical location, an internal state, or perhaps a poetic meeting of the two. Using our beautiful surroundings of Petrified Forest National Park as inspiration, this workshop will lead students through a series of writing prompts to ultimately create an original draft of a poem. In addition, the class will briefly touch on line breaks and the use of sound. All experience levels welcome.

Sunday, Sept. 3, at Petrified Forest National Park 9am-12pm.

Nature Writing: Drawing inspiration from the remarkable beauty of Petrified Forest National Park, this workshop offers participants of all experience levels an opportunity to take in the extraordinary beauty around them, then turn their observations into powerful and vivid poems. Using celebrated examples of both traditional and contemporary poetry, we’ll discuss techniques such as metaphor, imagery, sound and allusion as well as introducing basic techniques for creating musicality within a poem. All experience levels welcome.

Jodie Hollander’s work has appeared in journals such as The Poetry Review, The Yale Review, The Harvard Review, PN Review, The Kenyon Review, Poetry London, The Hudson Review, The Dark Horse, The New Criterion, The Rialto, Verse Daily, The Best Australian Poems of 2011, and The Best Australian Poems of 2015. Her debut full-length collection, My Dark Horses, was published with Liverpool University Press & Oxford University Press. Her second collection, Nocturne, will be published with the Liverpool & Oxford University Press in the spring of 2023.
