SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Missions National Historical is pleased to announce the relaunch of its “Artist-in-Residence" program. The Artist-in-Residence program is a national park system-wide program that hosts artists in parks to help connect visitors and tell park stories using art. It has been several years since San Antonio Missions National Historical Park has participated in the program, and thanks to the support from park partner, Mission Heritage Partners and a grant from Bexar County the program relaunches this year.
This year’s artist is Michelle Hernandez, a local south-side San Antonio clay artist and studio owner. Hernandez has 15 years working with clay and teaching the craft. “I am very honored to take part in this residency opportunity with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and Mission Heritage Partners," says artist Michelle Hernandez. “I am looking forward to paying homage to the acequias that have allowed this river to nourish our community for centuries."
As part of her ten-week residency, the National Park Service, and Hernandez will host open studio times for visitors to stop in and see the art-making process, learn about her clay art, and the park. The open studio times will run every Sunday, beginning September 17th, from 10: 00 AM to 2:00 PM at Mission San Juan’s “Tufa House." Additionally, the park and artist will host two clay-making workshops open to the public. The artist’s residency ends with a public exhibition of their art in early 2024. Follow San Antonio Missions on social media or check our website for updates on these offerings and the residency progress.
