The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 1. It is reproduced in full below.

A sinkhole has developed near tour stop 4 of Petersburg National Battlefield’s Eastern Front Unit tour road. For safety reasons, motorized vehicles are restricted from entering the road. Park staff are working to implement emergency repairs, and a larger repair and paving project is planned for the area in 2024. The road is anticipated to be closed to vehicles for 2-3 weeks until emergency repairs can be completed safely.

Bicyclists, walkers, and runners are welcome to continue to use the road for now. The damaged area has been blocked off, but please use caution when passing through the area, as repair crews may be working in the area. We will inform the public of changes by posting updates to the park’s website, Facebook, and Twitter pages.
