News Release: The Grove Theater opened in 1944 as an entertainment venue for White Manhattan Project workers in the segregated secret city. The largest theater in Oak Ridge at the time, it held seating for 1,000 people. The first event at the Grove Theatre was a screening of “Hail the Conquering Hero" on September 28th, 1944. Tickets were $0.35 for an adult and $0.11 for a child. The theater also held numerous live performances.
