News Release: Albin Polasek, the sculptor of the statue of Father Pierre Gibault in front of the Old Cathedral. There was a debate as to whether or not the statue should be done in bronze or granite. Members of the Fine Arts Commission argued that the granite would hold up better over time and would give a stronger appearance. It would not lose it's color as much as the bronze would.

News Release: Myrlie's Garden, located on the corner of Missouri Street, is the historic location of a garden plot where Myrlie Evers hosted a local garden club while the Evers family lived in the neighborhood. In the 1960s, African Americans were not allowed to join garden clubs, so Myrlie Evers worked to form her own club to prusue their interests. On the garden lot, The Garden Club would plant produce, herbs, and flowers for all to enjoy.

Search Underway for Missing Backpacker Hunter Fraser

News Release: A search is currently underway for a backpacker reported missing on June 7 in Olympic National Park. Hunter B. Fraser is a 44-year-old male from California and is 6’3" tall, trim build, with short dark brown hair. He has scruffy facial hair and smaller scars on his head and chin. He has a grey t-shirt and a grey backpack (not the red one in picture). He also has a light turquoise 1-person Mountain Hardware “Solitude" tent.

National Park Service to maintain existing wildland fire break near University Subdivision, McCarthy, AK

News Release: Copper Center - Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve Fire Management staff will be removing vegetation from the University Subdivision Fire Break June 12th through June 20th. The Fire Break is located two miles south of the town of McCarthy, off the McCarthy-May Creek Road. The Fire Break is roughly three miles long by 50 feet wide, and runs East-West from McCarthy Creek to the Kennicott River (Latitude 61°24.166' N, Longitude 142°56.082' W).
