Pyramid Area Fires Contained and Additional Fire Start

Sourdough Fire Evening Update

News Release: Warm and sunny afternoon weather, increased winds, and low humidity increased fire behavior on the lightning-caused Sourdough Fire. The fire is approximately 5 acres. Park officials have closed the Sourdough Trail to the junction with Big Beaver Trail and Sourdough and Pierce Mountain camps due to visitor safety.


Interagency Team successfully contains Watchman Campground Fire at Zion National Park

News Release: SPRINGDALE, Utah - Wildland firefighters successfully contained the ~1/4-acre Watchman Campground Fire on Saturday, July 29, 2023. At approximately 1257 a Law Enforcement Ranger that was patrolling and called in a fire in the Watchman Campground, D Loop. All visitors were evacuated from the Watchman Campground and traffic was kept on SR-9. Engines were dispatched and on scene at 1313. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

J. Howard Kitching

News Release: New York native J. Howard Kitching enlisted in the US Army at the start of the Civil War. Torn between patriotic duty and family obligations, he fought in several battles and rose to the rank of colonel. Kitching died in January 1865 of wounds he got at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
