Park rangers announce new virtual museum exhibit: The People of the Desert

News Release: Joshua Tree National Park leadership is excited to announce the launch of the new virtual museum exhibit, “People of the Desert: Joshua Tree National Park Exhibit." Developed by park staff and the National Park Service Museum Management Program, the virtual exhibit features over 200 objects, archival items, and historic photographs from the park museum collection.


Hurricane Ridge Road will reopen following recent fire activity

News Release: Port Angeles, Wash. - Fire suppression efforts, aided by recent rain and cooler weather, will allow the park to reopen the Hurricane Ridge Road and Obstruction Point Road to all traffic on Saturday, September 2. The fire grew an acre overnight but continues to smolder and remain manageable. However, if dry conditions persist or fire activity increases, the area may need to be closed again to support fire suppression efforts.



Tourism to Independence National Historical Park creates $178 million in Economic Benefits

News Release: Philadelphia - A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 2.7 million visitors to Independence National Historical Park in 2022 spent $178 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 2.4 thousand jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $282 million.


Moores Creek Closed Due to Hurricane Idalia

News Release: Due to continued flooding as a result of Hurricane Idalia, Moores Creek National Battlefield will remain closed through September 4, 2023. This will include all park trails and roads. A determination will be made about park operations for Tuesday September 5, pending a thorough investigation of the safety of the park.

Final Oil and Gas Lease to be Relinquished in Montana’s Badger-Two Medicine Area

News Release: WASHINGTON - The Departments of the Interior and Agriculture today announced that, as part of a settlement with the sole remaining lessee, the final federal oil and gas lease in the Badger-Two Medicine area will be relinquished. This significant milestone, decades in the making, will help ensure that the natural and cultural resources on the ancestral homelands of the Blackfeet Nation are protected.

Biden-Harris Administration Holds First-Ever Gulf of Mexico Offshore Wind Energy Auction

News Release: WASHINGTON - The Department of the Interior today held the first-ever offshore wind energy auction for the Gulf of Mexico region, resulting in one lease area receiving a high bid of $5.6 million. RWE Offshore US Gulf, LLC was the winner of the Lake Charles Lease Area, which has the potential to generate approximately 1.24 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity and power nearly 435,400 homes with clean, renewable energy.
